    When filling out a Calls for Service (CFS) record, if it was a medical-related call that you are filling out, you will be asked to indicate the Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) Code. See the table below for valid EMD Codes, Incident Types, and descriptions.

     

    Code Chief Complaint / Incident Type Description
    1 Abdominal Pain / Problems Includes abdominal or flank pain not caused by trauma.
    2 Allergies / Stings / Bites Allergic reactions or anaphylaxis from insects, food, drugs, etc.
    3 Animal Bites / Attacks Injuries caused by domestic or wild animals.
    4 Assault / Sexual Assault Physical assault or suspected sexual assault. May involve multiple injuries.
    5 Back Pain (Non-Traumatic) Back pain not caused by recent trauma or significant fall.
    6 Breathing Problems Difficulty breathing, shortness of breath, asthma attack, etc.
    7 Burns / Explosions Thermal, chemical, or electrical burns; may include explosions or blasts.
    8 Carbon Monoxide / Hazmat / Inhalation Carbon monoxide exposure, inhalation of toxic substances, or hazardous materials.
    9 Cardiac or Respiratory Arrest / Death Cardiac arrest, respiratory arrest, or obvious death conditions.
    10 Chest Pain / Chest Discomfort Non-traumatic chest pain, tightness, or discomfort (potential cardiac issues).
    11 Choking Airway obstruction by a foreign body or severe difficulty swallowing.
    12 Convulsions / Seizures Active seizure, postictal state, or repeated seizure activity.
    13 Diabetic Problems Hypoglycemia, hyperglycemia, or other diabetes-related complications.
    14 Drowning / Diving / SCUBA Accident Near-drowning, drowning, or diving-related injuries (e.g., decompression sickness).
    15 Electrocution / Lightning Electrical shock injuries, lightning strikes.
    16 Eye Problems / Injuries Eye trauma, chemical exposure, vision loss, or pain.
    17 Falls Injuries from any fall (includes from standing, stairs, or significant heights).
    18 Headache Severe or abnormal headache, possibly migraine, excluding trauma.
    19 Heart Problems / AICD Heart-related problems (irregular heartbeat, pacemaker, defibrillator issues).
    20 Heat / Cold Exposure Hypothermia, frostbite, heat exhaustion, or heatstroke.
    21 Hemorrhage / Lacerations Serious bleeding (internal or external), severe cuts, or wounds.
    22 Inaccessible Incident / Entrapment Confined space, structural collapse, or trapped patient scenarios.
    23 Overdose / Poisoning (Ingestion) Intentional or accidental overdose, poison ingestion, or chemical ingestion.
    24 Pregnancy / Childbirth / Miscarriage Labor, imminent delivery, complications (e.g., bleeding, miscarriage).
    25 Psychiatric / Abnormal Behavior / Suicide Attempt Crisis related to mental health or behaviors that pose a threat of self-harm.
    26 Sick Person (Specific Diagnosis) General illness, fatigue, fever, or unclear symptoms without trauma.
    27 Stab / Gunshot / Penetrating Trauma Penetrating wounds from knives, firearms, or other objects.
    28 Stroke (CVA) / Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA) Possible stroke symptoms, including speech difficulty, facial droop, or weakness.
    29 Traffic / Transportation Incidents Vehicle crashes, bicycle or pedestrian collisions, train incidents, etc.
    30 Traumatic Injuries (Specific) Serious injuries from blunt or penetrating trauma (not covered by other categories).
    31 Unconscious / Fainting (Near) / Syncope Patient found unconscious, fainted, or nearly fainted.
    32 Unknown Problem (Person Down) Unknown circumstances; person found unresponsive or “down” without details.
    33 Transfer / Interfacility / Palliative Care Medical transports between facilities, hospice, palliative care, or special care transfers.
