Network Updates (April 2013)

Recommended Posts

Christopher

Since our recent network-wide re-install and upgrade, there have been a number of updates which I'm happy to introduce to everyone. As always, I do my best to test these features before making them live, but I'm only human and I can't possibly catch everything wrong. If you ever experience a problem with any of these features or are unaware on how to use them, feel free to reply to this post with your questions or issues.

April 2013 Network Update Highlights

TeamSpeak 3 Voice over IP (VoIP) Server

Introducing an all-new voice server that we can all use to communicate with one another. Never heard of TeamSpeak? Think of it as Skype, but without video. You can jump into several different "channels" or "rooms" that are created by admins of the server. This software is used world-wide amongst PC gamers especially when playing first-person shooter games, as they can communicate with one another, even if they aren't on the same team. Our voice server has 100 slots (meaning that up to 100 people can be on the server at-a-time) which can be upgraded at anytime to accompany more members as we grow. If you don't have TeamSpeak 3, you can download and install it from http://www.teamspeak.com/. Your computer or PC will need a mic (or an external mic) to chat with other people via voice. If you do not have a mic, you can also type messages. For protection purposes, our TeamSpeak 3 server is password protected and may be used for member use only. Friends of friends can join, but the server may not be used for strangers' hangout for public chats. For the connection and password information, see our TeamSpeak 3 page (viewable by official members only).

Music in Profile

Introducing an all-new feature to our website. All official members of the Team of Weapons And Tactics (including staff) can now add music of their choice to their profiles. With this feature, you can set the music to automatically play when visitors visit your profile, or play only when a visitor clicks on a "play" button on a music player within your profile. You can specify a URL (web address) to the song or simply upload a song from your PC.

Ranking System

An all-new ranking system allows members of the Team of Weapons And Tactics to be ranked within our organization based on 40 pre-defined military and custom-made ranks along with 3 Top Member ranks. Ranks are determined by your accumulative number of reputation points. As you post and make a positive image of yourself, you will earn reputation points. Members provide others with reputation points by rating other members' posts, topics, and profiles. Note that you can not only earn points but you can lose them too. Start making an ass out of yourself and you could end up getting demoted. The ranking system is setup to promote and demote members automatically, where no human intervention is required. Member reputation points are listed under each member's name in their posts and next to each member's name in the Members listing of our website. In the beginning ranks, the difference in the required points is small, while later ranks have larger point requirements to achieve. Top Member ranks require a significantly larger number of points, ranging from 5 - 6x the number of points required to rank up in the normal set of ranks. Warning: Members who attempt to abuse the ranking system will have their rank reset by an administrator. Do not abuse the ranking system; have fun and work on it legitimately with everyone else.

Awards System

Introducing an all-new and improved awards system. Members of the Team of Weapons And Tactics (including staff) can achieve awards by fulfilling the requirements for each award and those awards will be shown in their profile as well as under their name in all their posts. All Member Awards have specific requirements which are shown in the individual descriptions of the awards within the Awards page. All awards have a point value, added on to your current point count when you achieve award. These points contribute to the same points that determine your rank. Awards with smaller point values are generally not highly difficult to achieve, while the awards that have the highest point values are the ones most difficult to receive.

Additional Pages

Under the Team of Weapons And Tactics Network tab at the top of our website, you can see a comprehensive list of useful pages, links, and other points of interest. Browse Battlelog, read the news, and browse the web without ever leaving our website.

Calendar System

Admins, mods, and members can utilize the all-new calendar section on our website to view, create, comment, rate, and attend events. All events created by members are moderated (must be approved). This means that while members can create events, they will not appear on the calendar until approved by a moderator or administrator.

These features conclude our April 2013 Network Updates. We will, of course, add features and improve those which we have over time. However, this is expected to be the last major update for a while. Please feel free to post your feedback and questions below and we'll do our best to answer them.

We could (and I'd like to) but not everyone has it. Nor has everyone heard of it. On top of that, some don't have mics (for their PCs). But, oh well. I've talked to most (if not all) of the guys here with the in-game VoIP system.

Too bad consoles can't run TeamSpeak themselves. Would be using that all the time if they could.

Ah, yes! Totally forgot about the ability to use our smartphones. +10 for that thought, Gilly. :)

I'd use teamspeak, but it's a pain removing my PX21's from my console to my PC and back to my console.

It's honestly not that big of a deal. :)

You can use your smartphone if you'd like or when we're in-game just use the built-in VoIP. Teamspeak is mainly when we want to talk to each other but are on separate teams, etc.
