Intel to AMD Translation Guide (And Vice Versa)
If you've been using Intel CPUs all your life and want to understand AMD equivalents (or the other way around), here’s an easy guide:
1. Entry-Level CPUs
- Intel: Core i3 → AMD: Ryzen 3
- Intel: Core i5 → AMD: Ryzen 5 (mid-range performance)
2. Mid to High-End CPUs
- Intel: Core i7 → AMD: Ryzen 7 (high-performance, good for gaming and multi-threaded apps)
- Intel: Core i9 → AMD: Ryzen 9 (enthusiast-level, many cores for heavy multi-tasking and rendering)
3. Ultra-High-End / Workstation
- Intel: Xeon → AMD: Threadripper or EPYC (used for servers, heavy content creation)
4. Apple & ARM Notes
Apple M-series (M1 → M4) doesn’t directly translate to Intel or AMD but for comparison:
- M2 ≈ Intel Core i5/i7 or Ryzen 5/7 (in efficiency vs performance balance)
- M4 ≈ Intel Core i9 / Ryzen 9 (high performance with low power consumption)
5. Summary
If you know your Intel CPU, the equivalent AMD Ryzen number usually follows the same pattern: lower number = entry-level, higher number = high performance. For workstations, compare cores and threads rather than just names.
